Tell us about your thesis work which lead to an interesting project at Sandvik!
I had an idea of developing guitar strings in a new alloy, where sound is not deteriorated because of corrosion. This is a known problem among many guitar players. Sandvik was interested in the idea and I started working full time at Sandvik Materials Technology’s R&D department, leading a project to develop these new stainless strings. A successful project that lead to my first patents.
How did your career develop after that?
After my initial project was finalized, I continued to manage other product development projects for the R&D department at Sandvik Materials Technology. However, my fiancée studied in Uppsala, and I was provided with an opportunity to start working for another Sandvik business area, at the same time enabling me to move closer to her. I started working as a Project Manager for Sandvik Tooling Research in Stockholm. Now, after two years, I’m a section manager for the materials physics department, responsible for and lucky to support a number of co-workers.
What is it like working in Stockholm?
I can’t imagine a better job than I have today. I work with the most skilled people, from technicians to PhDs that have different expertise and cultural backgrounds. It’s a working life in continuous development.
How has your work helped you to develop personally?
I would say, in many ways. It’s difficult to be precise. I’ve grown as a person, feeling more confident in taking decisions and supporting ideas, but I still have many things to learn and improve.
What attracted you to Sandvik in the first place?
To be honest I didn’t know that much about Sandvik before I began my first summer job in 2002, but the manager that I started working for was a very skilled physicist and a wonderful person. In 2003, he asked me if I would like to continue the project we worked on the previous summer. I answered yes, but under one condition, I wanted to work abroad as well. He helped me with that; I got to work for Sandvik Materials Technology in Chomutov in the Czech Republic that summer. With that experience, I started to think of Sandvik as a company that I would really want to work for in the future.
Do you have any advice to students who are interested in Sandvik?
Try to get to know the company through summer jobs or internships. Be open for different jobs and get to know the people you work with. Try to learn as much as you can during those periods and don’t give up if you feel that things are difficult. Another way is of course through a good thesis work.
What has been the biggest surprise about working at Sandvik?
There is so much to do, in so many fields; there are so many interesting products, machines, technologies and aspects to Sandvik that it’s simply mindblowing. That’s something I couldn’t imagine before I started working for Sandvik. | Research and development:
From the foundation of the company in 1862, new products and manufacturing processes have been the base for Sandvik's growth.
